Courtesy of Eurobasket LLC Every week we bring you a list of the top former Friars players who continue their career in pro basketball.
#1. Davonte Gaines, a 6'7'' guard who graduated from Providence in 2024 and currently plays professionally in Mexico, recently showcased his talent for Halcones de Ciudad Obregon. In their last game against the Toros, despite his remarkable performance, Gaines could not prevent his team from suffering a heavy 106-84 defeat on the road. As the top scorer of the game with 24 points in 34 minutes, Gaines exhibited great skill and determination, especially considering he is only in his second season of professional basketball. He demonstrated his scoring prowess and contributed 2 rebounds against the Toros, although it wasn't enough to secure a victory for Obregon. Throughout the season, Gaines has maintained solid statistics, averaging 11.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.3 steals per game in the 39 games he has played so far. His consistent performance and contributions on the court reflect his potential as a rising star in the basketball world.
#2. David Duke Jr., a 26-year-old guard standing at 6'4'' and an alum of Friars from 2021, currently plays professionally in Spain. Recently, he showcased his talent by aiding BAXI Manresa in defeating the league leader Real Madrid 94-87 in a Spanish Liga Endesa match on Friday night. Despite only playing for 12 minutes, Duke Jr. managed to contribute 5 points to the team's victory. BAXI Manresa, currently holding a record of 16-18, sits in the tenth position in the league standings. This win marked their fourth consecutive triumph, a remarkable feat considering the Regular Season has concluded. Duke Jr., in his debut season with the team, displayed an impressive performance against Real Madrid, earning 5 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 assist, ultimately helping his team emerge as the champion in that game. Throughout the season, Duke Jr. has maintained an average of 8.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game in the 10 games he has played so far. His valuable contributions on the court have undoubtedly made him a key player for BAXI Manresa.
#3. Canadian champion Kalif Young, a 6'9'' center who graduated from Providence in 2020, currently plays professionally in Romania. Despite his best efforts, Young and his team Oradea (23-5) fell short against Cluj Napoca in a recent game. In a valiant effort, the finalist contributed 4 points, 9 rebounds, and 1 assist in 20 minutes of play. However, the league-leading Oradea suffered a tough 103-78 loss to the dominant Cluj Napoca. Throughout the season, Young has been a key player for Oradea, averaging 8.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game in 35 appearances. His performance against Cluj Napoca showcased his skills on the court, even though the final result did not go in his team's favor.
#4. Clifton Moore, a towering 6'10'' center who is a 26-year-old Friars alumnus from the class of 2023, is currently showcasing his skills playing professionally in France. Recently, Moore displayed his talent on the court for Saint-Quentin Basket-Ball but unfortunately couldn't lead his team to victory against Poitiers in the French ELITE 2 league, which is the second division in France. In the match against Poitiers, Moore put up a commendable performance, scoring 9 points and securing 7 rebounds during his 26 minutes on the court. Despite his noteworthy efforts, Saint-Quentin Basket-Ball was narrowly defeated 76-73 by the lower-ranked Poitiers team in the Play-Out group stage. This season, Moore has been averaging 7.7 points per game and grabbing 5.7 rebounds per game across three matches. Although his individual statistics reflect his contributions to the team, Moore and his teammates will look to regroup and strive for better results in their upcoming games.
#5. Ghanaian Ben Bentil, a 6'9'' forward/center who graduated from Providence in 2016 and received the All-Big East Most Improved Player of the Year award, currently plays professionally in Taiwan. In a recent game, despite Bentil's solid performance, the Formosa Dreamers (22-14) suffered a heavy 109-84 defeat in Taipei against the lower-ranked (#5) Kings. Bentil, the team's second-best scorer with 13 points, also contributed 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals in 30 minutes of play. Although Bentil showcased an impressive performance with 13 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists against the Kings, his team was unable to secure the victory. Throughout the season, Bentil has maintained excellent individual statistics, averaging 18.2 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.5 steals per game across 27 appearances. Notably, Bentil is a naturalized American, adding to his international basketball profile.
